Choi Kwang-Do is the essence of tradition and the power of innovation.

Choi Kwang-Do provides the vehicle by which both children and adults develop self-confidence, self-discipline, concentration, and an improved self-esteem. Much like traditional martial arts, Choi Kwang-Do instills these traits in our students through class protocol, proper training methods, and drills. Our young students immediately start to learn discipline and the respect of other people with nothing more than a simple bow. All students train in an atmosphere conducive to learning with encouragement and guidance from our motivational instructors.

Innovative Training Style

While character and personal development is learned in a traditional martial arts atmosphere, the technical side of Choi Kwang-Do is pure innovation. Based on principles derived from the scientific fields of Biomechanics, Kinesiology, and Sports Medicine, Choi Kwang-Do provides a complete self-defense system that is highly effective - yet provides a complete health system for both body and mind. Choi Kwang-Do movements are natural and stress-free reducing the chance of injuries that you can sustain in traditional martial arts.

Because most traditional martial arts are difficult to learn and unrealistic in actual self-defense situations, Choi Kwang-Do movements were designed to be easy to learn and are very effective. From your very first lesson, your techniques are street oriented. Even the smallest of children can develop a tremendous amount of power!

Unlike some martial arts where the athlete is the only one who can excel, Choi Kwang-Do can be learned by everyone, young or old, male or female.

The Goals of Choi Kwang-Do

1. Learn Practical Self-Defense

Choi Kwang-Do is a system of natural, easy to learn movements designed to allow individuals of all ages, male or female, to defend themselves against aggressive, usually larger opponents. You will be amazed at the power and speed that you can develop in a relatively short period of time with proper training techniques.

2. Develop a Strong Mind

Choi Kwang-Do is taught according to individual needs and level of skill. Through the instructors' guidance and encouragement, students begin to establish personal goals and are given the direction necessary to achieve them. Students learn that by setting realistic goals, dedication, and hard work anything in possible. They develop self-confidence! Also the virtues of respect, concentration, discipline and motivation are the characteristics of a truly confident individual. All are properly stressed throughout Choi Kwang-Do.

3. Promote Better Health

Choi Kwang-Do is the refinement of your body's natural movements. Students are taught to become more relaxed and fluid to eliminate wasted motion for increased speed and power. Choi Kwang-Do's natural aerobic effect improves the cardiovascular system (heart and lungs) and accelerates the body's metabolism. As a result, the body burns more calories and along with a proper diet results in weight loss. Regular training also results in increased balance, flexibility, strength, muscle tone, speed, coordination, reflexes, and timing.

1. Techniques that have been researched using modern scientific principles 1. Techniques based on outdated training methods.
2. Completely fluid motions with relaxation to generate power and speed. 2. Concentrate on power from tension, which creates stress in the body and mind.
3. No hyperextension of any joints. 3. Many techniques hyper-extend in an effort to gain power, which causes joint damage and increases stress.
4. All exercises researched to eliminate the chance of injury during exercise. 4. Exercises can cause pulled or ripped muscles due to partner style stretching and tension during stretching.
5. Every technique in Choi Kwang-Do is performed exactly the same way whether performing in patterns, combinations, or full power equipment drills. 5. The techniques are performed completely different when performing free sparring, patterns, or self-defense drills.
6. All instruction is guided by a standard curriculum throughout the world. 6. Each instructor teaches in his or her own way.
7. Competition within you is taught in order to improve each student to his or her personal best. Choi Kwang-Do trains for realistic self-defense on the street. There is no sparring or tournament fighting. 7. Competition among students in tournaments and sparring in class forces the label of loser on some students. This destroys their self-confidence. Also, competition is played by rules. This gives some students a false expectation of their ability to defend themselves on the street, where no rules exist.
